The holidays are quickly approaching, and we needed to get Urbanbiscuit into the holiday spirit. I started looking around for some online tools that could help make a great holiday banner to put on our store homepage. After searching the web, I came across this free site that has some really creative ways for sharing your photos.

In the end, I spent a few hours on the Photofunia site to make our holiday banner image. Photofunia has a ton of really clever background for your photos. You can use photos from the web, or upload photos from your computer and put them on backgrounds like a billboard, or even in a magazine.

Tomorrow is a big day, Election Day 2012. Sounds almost like a science fiction movie. I preparation for Election Day, I was wondering if there is some kind of official dress code enforced at the polling stations. It turns out that each state has the final say in how a dress code is enforced at local polling stations. There’s a good article about both sides of the issue that discusses the possibility that dressing in your political swag might be considered passive electioneering.

In any case, when you’re watching the election results begin to pour in, you can wear whatever you like, and you can have your furry pal help support your chose n candidate.

Just read this great article about budget resources for online businesses. When we recently started Urbanbiscuit, we asked one of Jen’s friends for help. She did a great job doing the logo. It went through a few variations, and ended up the way it looks today. I’ve been working on the homepage slide images, but I’m not a professional graphic artist, just a photoshop dabbler. I’m going to follow this guide and start figuring out where our budget can add some real bang for our buck in terms of graphic design.

A Disneyland Hack to keep your kids from getting lost

Disney. Took the kids and the inlaws to Disneyland last week and had a blast! When we got to the park in the morning on the first day of the trip, I wanted to make sure that we all were clear and consistent on a protocol if one of the kids got lost in the park. Disney can of course be overwhelming and the kids could wander off and get lost in a blink of an eye.

On the tram ride from the parking lot to the park entrance, I snapped a photo just to make sure I had a picture of each of the girls and what they were wearing, just in case. I can never remember what they’re wearing.

After we entered the park, I went to one of the small concession stands near the entrance and asked the people working there what is the best advice for finding your child if she should get lost.

The woman at the concession stand had a very clever idea, that I wanted to share. She gave us three “1st time visit” buttons to pin on the girls’ shirts. She also gave me a sharpie marker, instructing me to write each girls name and my cellphone number on the inside of the button that would only be visible if they showed it to someone.

Fortunately, we had a great time and no one got lost! But that’s a tip that I’ll be following on future disneyland trips.

Puppies are born with baby teeth, just like babies. When your puppy is about 5 months old he/she will begin to lose their baby teeth.

But what happens to the teeth they lose?

As a veterinarian I never paid much attention to where the teeth go, but always assured owners that their puppy would love their teeth at the right times, despite the owner’s efforts to “see” this process in action. Now that I am the owner of a 6 month old puppy I thought it would be interesting to chronicle where the puppy teeth go, and why owners shouldn’t be worried.

Lucy my 6 month old Airedale puppy, otherwise known as “the devil”, has left teeth in a variety of places. Her favorite spot is embedded in the skin of Linus my other dog. I have had teeth left on me, embedded in rawhide chews and even coughed up onto the floor. I’m pretty certain I saw several teeth in her stool after she swallowed them, and even saw her chew on one. No matter what happens to the teeth remember that you may see blood spots on toys, or in other places until your dog’s gum clots and the blood stops. The mouth has a very large blood supply which can cause bleeding to seem excessive. Do not be concerned, this bleeding is normal and will stop.

Your dog is preprogrammed to lose teeth at a certain age. Those teeth will end up being swallowed, lost and deposited in toys. Losing puppy teeth is part of growing up. Unfortunately, until those teeth are completely lost, the process is most painful for pet owners and their families; just ask my 1 year old how he feels about being my puppy’s chew toy.

Canine Coat Care..What I’ve learned from my new pup Lucy.

We just introduced a new puppy to our family. Her name is Lucy and she is a 9 week old Airedale Terrier. For those of you who are not familiar with the Airedale imagine this: 9 pounds of stubbornness, smarts, chutzpah and sharp teeth! Consequently she has a knack for getting dirty where ever dirt, poop or pee can be found (kind of like my 4 year old son). I have to bathe her often to keep her clean. My concern is that I don’t want her exposed to chemicals or other harsh elements, just as I don’t want my kids exposed to these things. My wife and I decided a long time ago when our first daughter was born that we would do our best to buy organic whenever possible. We wanted to keep our home as free from chemicals and pollutants as possible.

If you are curious, here are some of the chemicals you should avoid when looking for a good organic shampoo or conditioner product:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfates
Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
Derivatives of Lauryl Alcohol

Mureth Sulfate
Propylene Glycol (Antifreeze)
Olefin Sulfonate (Deodorized Kerosene)

In my search for a good organic shampoo for Lucy I chose a product by PetKind, a company out of Canada that is completely organic and makes wonderful shampoo and conditioners all from organic raw materials. After her bath she smells like a lily flower. My kids can hug and kiss her as much as they’d like, and I never have to worry about harsh chemicals affecting Lucy or my kids. These organic pet products are similar to the natural products sold for human use, and are still quite capable of removing the dirt and debris that very healthy dog/puppy seems to be drawn to. And despite being organic, the shampoo leaves Lucy’s coat cleaner without any greasy residue. Natural products are no less effective than the most aggressive chemical laden shampoos.
